Whether you're in the antique shop, at the garage sale or estate sale, there is a certain behavior you must adopt if you are to be successful in your quest for the perfect collectable. Practice this behavior each time you go hunting and soon you'll know how to spot what you're searching for. Knowledge is power.

• Ask questions. Learn as much as you can about the item, even if you're not ready to buy. It'll be useful later.
• Train your eye to recognize the type of items you're interested in and where they're found.
• Study, touch, read and learn about your favorite kind of collectable. Do your homework before you shop.
• Whenever possible, buy the antique when you see it. The item is rarely there when you return if it is a good bargain and/or a genuine antique.
• Turn pieces over, look inside and behind. Look carefully for marks on china, glass, silver, and furniture.
• Bring a pocket magnifying glass and a small extendable mirror.
• Look carefully for signs of repair. There is little value placed on broken china or glass objects. Minor repairs on furniture are usually OK.
• Whenever possible, personally examine auction items prior to the bidding.
• And finally...If it sounds too good to be true... You know the rest of it.
