2002 Winter National Senior Games Cancelled

(For Immediate Release: October 9, 2001)

BATON ROUGE, La. ------- The 2002 Winter National Senior Games - The Senior Olympics will not be held, according to an announcement Tuesday from the National Senior Games Association. The 2002 event was to be held January 4-11 at Lake Placid, N.Y.

At the same time, the NSGA said the organization plans to resume the Winter Games in 2004. The Winter National Senior Games has been held only once previously in 2000 at Lake Placid.

This was an extremely difficult decision, said NSGA President and CEO Bill Bankhead. Certainly, the present state of the economy in our nation was one of the factors we considered in this decision. Ultimately, we came to the conclusion that it was in the best interest of our athletes and the NSGA that we delay holding the next Winter National Senior Games until 2004.

We wanted to make this announcement now before our participants proceeded with their plans to attend, said Bankhead. While we are disappointed that there will not be a Winter Games in 2002, we firmly believe that our winter event can become a success in the same way the experience of the Summer National Senior Games has been enjoyed.

The Summer National Senior Games - The Senior Olympics has been held every two years since 1987 and has attracted an average of more than 10,000 senior athletes age 50 and above to the last three summer events.
The 2003 Summer National Senior Games - The Senior Olympics will be held in the community of Hampton Roads, VA.

The NSGA thanks its corporate sponsors: TIME Magazine, Pfizer Inc, Buick Park Avenue, LaurusHealth, Osteo-Bi-Flex, The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy System and Solivita Active Adult Community.
